Every Wednesday in October 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Sign up for a single class or all five.

Join us in the garden this October as we reflect, write, and welcome the holiday season.. Each week offers a gentle pause in the midst of fall’s busy rhythm—new routines, shifting schedules, and the stirrings of the holidays. Writing Wednesdays will bring a dose of positivity and peaceful intention to your week, helping you harvest gratitude, connection, and joy.

 

What is Positive Journaling and How is it Different from Traditional Journaling Practice?
Positive journaling is a little different than keeping a diary. Instead of just writing down what happened during the day, it’s more about pausing to reflect on things like gratitude, joy, curiosity, or hope. It’s not about pretending everything’s fine when it’s not or slapping a smile on a hard day. It’s really about gently shifting the focus—balancing out all the negative thoughts that tend to run the show in our minds.
 
What is the typical Writing Wednesday schedule?
 We meet and briefly discuss the writing prompt of the day, usually focusing on a specific positive emotion. Then everyone takes a    short walk through the garden, silently noticing whatever the garden reveals that day. Then after about 20 minutes, we return and start writing in our journal quietly, reflecting on what we just experienced. After writing, we voluntarily share what we learned. The class lasts about one hour.
 
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Just bring yourselves! Journals and pens will be provided.
 
Tell me about the facilitator, Ellen Bell.
Ellen Bell is a certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher with a specialty in the practice of positive journaling for wellness. She currently teaches the Positive Journaling Method at Sherman Library and Gardens in Newport Beach, California, where the natural beauty of the garden is the perfect place to plant seeds of positivity.

Please note if you need to cancel, you must send your cancellation request to education@slgardens.org no later than 5 business days in advance of the scheduled class for a full refund. If less than 5 business days, you will not be eligible for a refund.
